Question by Jamie: Can I run a GeForce 9500GT 1GB graphics card on my Gigabyte S-Series Motherboard?
Hi.

I currently have an All-In-Wonder X1800XL 256mb graphics card. I am on windows xp. I'm wanting to get some games in the future that will need a much better graphics card to run. So I was thinking of getting a much better card, such as the GeForce 9500GT 1GB graphics card.

I have seen the requirements for it, at:

http://www.directron.com/bfge951024gte.html

My Motherboard (i think its this) is here:

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/FileList/NewTech/2006_motherboard_newtech/tech_20060523_f2.htm

I have everything for the graphics card except a couple of things, which I'm not sure if I have which is why im asking if i do here.

My Motherboard has PCI-E graphics slots, but doesnt specify weather they are 16x ones or not, which are needed for the graphics card.

It also needs a 350W PCI Express-compliant system power supply with a combined 12V current rating of 18A or more.

Does anyone know weather my motherboard has this or not? Or if i cannot use this graphics card, suggest the best one i could use for my system thats better than the one i already have?

Thanks
My current graphics card requires one PCI-E x16 slot, and since that works fine, it means i have atleast one of these slots. On the link, it refers to the PCI-E graphics slots as a plural, so im guessing theres more than one. Now just for the power.
On the Link to my mother board it refers to the PCI slots as plural.
My pc is quite new, 3ghz dual core, 3.5GB of ram etc. I bought it in july. Would a computer like this most likely have more than 350W? i'm not sure how I'd find out if i have though.

With power supplies there's no telling, the only way to find out the rating is to open the computer case and see what's printed on the PSU itself. Major manufacturers like Dell, HP, Acer etc often use the lowest-rated PSU that works for the factory configuration they're shipping.

Yes, the PCI-Express video slots on motherboards are x16. Some may be newer version 2.0 but that's not important.

Your power supply is separate from the motherboard, and while 350W is the minimum recommended, these days you'll usually need 450W or more for midrange video cards like the GeForce 9800GT, Radeon 4830 or higher.

That 1gb Geforce 9500GT isn't really a good buy- you're much better off with a 512mb 9600GT or Radeon 4670- those are the best cards you can use with a 350W power supply.

  1. Your mother board is sufficient for requirement of that level graphics card but first you have to increase SMPS power box to 600w better for future I know it is wastage of money just increase it to 450W; it is depend on your processor, Hard disk, mother and graphics card also.
