Question by Pon87: HDTV should a consumer wait for the new tech soon to arrive?
Hello, I was wondering as to what a consumer should do now that new HDTV technology such as the laser and OLED TVs are soon to arrive. I saw Sony 27" tv with a 1Meg:1 Contrast ratio and Mitsubishi's Laser TV technology which according to an article will be released at the end of this year. According to the article this new tech could replace plasmas and LCDs. I know the price might be high for this new tech but I would like to get some input on this issue. Thank you.

i think you should not wait for a better technology only if what you have now is worth scrap and not useful at all

  1. I do beleieve that these technologies will replace plasma displays as LCD displays on there own are quickly replacing plasma technology due to there free fall pricing that has occured over the past year.

Because prices have fallen for existing technologies at a much faster rate than previously thought, I think emerging technologies may have a difficult time finding there place. The technologies you mention were long thought to be replacements to LCD and Plasmas at a time when these technolgies were much much more expensive, now these newer technologies will end up being the more expensive alternative.

  2. Well there will always be something newer and fancier. Although what the TV is made of isn’t so important as the resolution it can produce. A good rear projection TV is still a good TV, even if its not Plasma or LCD. Certainly there are other issues as to size, longevity, weight, and so forth. But the resolution will always be there on good TVs no matter the technology.

  3. They are currently working on using laser technology for the HD signal, which will be more cost effective & more efficient. But, that is a ways off yet. I heard that two Brands were trying to have a model ready to release just in time for Christmas, but I think I would stick with the HDTV we have now, because that new one isn’t even proven yet.

  4. No you should not wait. If you like something then go ahead and get it. Otherwise you will be waiting all the time. Always get the already known and established technology. New technology is not known and may not last.
