Simple operation, clear photos, April 7, 2011

Disclaimer: This particular review isn’t being written from an avid photographer’s point of view.

I needed a small, inexpensive, good-quality, easy-to-use camera for my job. My main use for this camera is taking good, clear indoor before/after photos of various electronic devices and related components. My requirements are a large LCD viewer, the ability to use common AA batteries, have my settings (date/time, photo mode) retained after batteries were removed and replaced, and a quick way to transfer images to my PC’s that doesn’t rely solely on a USB cable.

Preferring not to have to deal with camera angle or cumbersome tricks to reduce flash reflection from shiny surfaces, I was hoping to find something that would allow effective non-flash settings where a semi steadily-held camera could take clear, acceptable indoor pictures as required by the companies that I do work for.

As much as I tried, I could not get good, consistent results with the e510 but I seem to have found that camera with the L24.

So far with the L24, I’ve taken pictures of HDTV televisions (displays powered both on and off), PCB boards, product labels, macro shots of venting capacitors, etc. – *all without flash*, using only ambient room lighting.

For me, time is an important factor and with these onsite job shots, I do not have the time or desire to do pre-shot adjustments or after-processing like resizing, gamma-tweaking, or cropping. The shots I take need to be ready to be attached to an email or be uploaded to technician portals. The settings that I have found that work for me is the “white balance” and “motion detect” set for auto, resolution set for 1024×768 (for email-ready small file and dimension), and flash set for “off”.

As long as my subjects aren’t in the shadows, the camera is held relatively steady, and the images framed properly, my pictures are clear and all I have to do once I return home is transfer to my PC, attach and send. The settings as described above allow clear pictures for my uses in both regular and macro modes.

The camera remembers my settings with its AA batteries out and its 3″ LCD viewer lets me verify a good shot (they’ve all been pretty good so far).

    Connectivity:
All of my PC’s have a card slot that accommodates the SD type, so if the included UC-E6 cable isn’t handy, I remove the SD card from the camera and transfer images that way. If I needed more of these cables, I can get them for $4 each on eBay.

You don’t have to use a SD card (camera has 17MB built-in) but I do recommend using a card for the extra storage and image-transfer/connectivity options.

When buying a SD card, consider the card-reading compatibility with your existing equipment if you intend on using using the card to transfer images. Some card readers do not read SDHC (high-capacity) cards, I was aware of this potential compatibility issue beforehand and bought a standard SD 2GB (not a SDHC) card.

I’m sure once more people buy this camera, more features than I covered will be discussed. There are settings on the L24 that I will probably never use. In my quick tour through the menu settings (haven’t read the manual yet – haha) I didn’t see where you can manually adjust aperture or shutter speed independently but there is an exposure control. The lack of manual settings might be a minus for serious photographers but like I said before, photography isn’t a hobby for me – I just want to take good pictures easily and quickly.

Good Compact Digital Camera, April 23, 2011

I purchased this camera for quick access during vacation and travel. Although the camera cannot zoom very far it still is a very good camera. Takes very clear pictures and can be slipped into your pockets very easily into my pocket. Transferring pictures is very easy just hook up the camera into the computer and click the you want and drag to the desktop. The only problem i have with the camera is that it has a hard time focusing on small texts. For example i want to copy a receipt and send it to the manufacturer it would come out blurry.

Overall this is a great camera and i would highly recommend this for travel or for quick takes

    Garbage!, July 25, 2011
    By

Bought this camera for my daughter. One month later, the battery compartment door retention pins break, rendering the unit useless and there was no way to close the door-not even with tape. I learned of this in July as she was away at school, but it is ‘guaranteed’ for 1 year! Yay! I followed Nikon’s directions to return to them. They advised me that they did not consider this covered as it was possible we may have dropped it or forced the door closed. I calmly explained that wasn’t the case AND that we had a friend with the same camera and same problem! ALSO, you can read the reviews of this camera on various sites (or the L-22) to see that it’s a common gripe. They would not fix it and wanted $93. After the postage/insurance to ship it to them, I could buy a new camera. But I will not ever buy another Nikon product. I am sticking with Canon as they have covered their product for me in the past OUT of warranty!!! You’ve been warned.

Sailboats Passing Each Other Zoom Test In Waikiki, October 9, 2011

Customer Video Review Length:: 0:30 Mins

In this video there are two sailboats passing each other nearly a half a mile out off of Waikiki Beach. The zoom on this Canon SX40 is pretty amazing as you can see. I’m happy with the camera as it also takes nice photos also.

Big step up from the SX30IS, September 27, 2011

This review is from: Canon SX40 HS 12.1MP Digital Camera with 35x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7-inch Vari-Angle Wide LCD. (Camera)

I’ve only had the SX40HS for 1 day , but in comparing the photo’s from the SX30is I own to the SX40hs the quality of the photo’s are much sharper with true to life colors, the biggest improvement I see is in low light. The low light photo’s are sharp and bright but with that natural lighting look.I purchased the SX30IS last fall and was generally happy with it. When I heard that the SX40HS was to have the new Digic 5 processor I jumped at it. I love the fact that it’s an all in 1 camera, HD Video, zoom and wide angle photo’s. The SX40HS has the new Canon DIGIC 5 Image Processor and a high-sensitivity 12.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor dropped down from 14 Megapixel in the SX30IS. This advanced Canon technology delivers stunning image quality with reduced noise and blur and for the first time in the super zoom it brings high-speed burst shooting and 1080p video to the party, even though the video looks super it’s only at 24fps, why not 30 fps is beyond me. As I play more I’ll add to this post. My SX30IS is up on E-Bay as I type this.

Finally! I got myself a camera a par above my point and shoots! For so long I’ve been contemplating to get a more ‘professional’ camera until I reminded myself that I’m not a ‘professional’ yet. So, to satisfy my budding amateur skills without leaping unprepared to a yet to be explored discipline of photography, I happily decided to get myself Canon’s newly released high end, advanced camera– Canon SX40HS. And I am completely satisfied! Having a busy lifestyle with a toddler and stroller in tow, I needed a high end camera that meets my lifestyle with an extra jazz and ease of use. For a beginner, I find this camera very user friendly. A great start to familiarize myself with its features and practice my new found skill. I super LOVE its 35x ZOOM and the quality low light shots are amazing! It is not heavy and feels just right in my hands. I love the fact that I only need to stay put in my seat while taking great shots while my husband plays ball on the court and capturing my little boy’s teddy bear dance from the mom’s corner. A big WOW from a happy mom!

If you simply want more of your memories caught on film…, May 3, 2011

Amazon Verified Purchase(http://www.amazon.com/gp/community-help/amazon-verified-purchase/185-8946021-6164859', ‘AmazonHelp’, ‘width=400,height=500,resizable=1,scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,status=1′);return false; “>What’s this?)

this camera is for you. This camera does have some great features, some of which I have not even had time to use yet. The main draw, however, (other than the size) is that it is simple and easy to use. There are tons of point and shoot cameras out there, and there is no use being snobby over which one you buy, because they all do pretty much the same thing. This one is great for the price. You could get a nicer camera, but for 90% of the people in the market for a digital camera, this will do what you need and want it to, and more.

I use mine mainly for snapshots and spontaneous pictures with friends and the like. However, I do enjoy photography, and I have experience with SLR cameras as well (and I own one). Therefore, I also sometimes take artistic shots. This camera does it all unless you are a professional photographer, in which case, you already know you need a different camera.

The size is perfect. This will even fit in small pockets on skinny jeans or whatever. The case I bought with the camera adds some bulk, but the camera is so slim, even the case fits in my pockets comfortably.

I use Amazon Student Prime, so shipping is never a hassle. I can’t really comment on other shipping speeds. The package was simple, but the camera box protects the camera with styrofoam and cardboard, and the shipping box used inflated plastic bags to keep the camera box safe. Someone would really have to try to damage the camera to manage it.

Amazon lists plenty of features of this camera, but here is my list:

    RECHARGEABLE!
Records HD movies with one button
Big LCD screen on back to help compose pictures in a size you can actually see
19 scenes to choose from to assist in getting a better picture
Pet Focus will find your pet’s face and once focused, will shoot the picture
There are several cool filters like selective coloring, a miniature effect and a fisheye effect
    Is tiny and lightweight
    Comes in cool colors
This camera will even warn you if it thinks someone blinked.

Bottom line: This camera is what you want. I search for weeks or longer before deciding to buy something, and I chose this camera. For a point and shoot, it has everything you need, and so many things you didn’t even know you wanted. Unless you don’t actually know what you’re looking for, you won’t regret buying this camera.

    Overall a great camera, May 13, 2011

Amazon Verified Purchase(http://www.amazon.com/gp/community-help/amazon-verified-purchase/185-8946021-6164859', ‘AmazonHelp’, ‘width=400,height=500,resizable=1,scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,status=1′);return false; “>What’s this?)

This camera pretty much rocks for its price. I bought this camera because I was in need of a camera update and the cell phone camera on my G2 wasn’t cutting it.

When I took this think out of the box for the first time I was glad to notice that it’s small and thin and fits nicely in my pocket. My old camera was much bulkier and I couldn’t carry it in my pocket without a strange looking bulge in my pants that made me look like an idiot.

I am not a digital photographer so I bought this camera as more of a point-and-shoot camera. I wanted a camera that I could snap a quick picture that would have lots of details and look pretty nice without too much photo editing. Normally when I take a picture I am wanting a picture of my friends or myself at a certain event or next to a landmark etc… So I wanted a camera that would be simple but still take a sweet picture. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had people trying to snap a picture for me only to not be able to get my old camera to work right and the picture(s) turn out horribly. Like I want to load a fuzzy blur up onto my Facebook page.

That being said, this camera can also cause difficulties with the technologically retarded. This camera has to achieve a “focus” before it will snap a picture. Sometimes you can push down the button trying to take a picture and the “focus” will be off and it won’t even snap a photo at all. For those special individuals, who for some reason are always snapping my photos, this can cause extreme problems with their abilities to be able get the camera to function.

Now you may be asking yourself why I would have rated the camera so high and said that it rocks and then ripping it a new one, but I just wanted to let you know the only problem that I have had with it so far. This camera perhaps is not the easiest camera to use, but if you spend 5 minutes to learn how it works then you will be able to get excellent pictures from it.

The camera’s picture taking mode basically has 4 different options, Auto mode, Scene mode, Smart portrait, and Subject tracking. In my experience so far with this camera I have noticed that the Auto-mode isn’t always perfect. I may have to take a bunch of pictures, before I can get the picture looking like I want it to look. To be honest I am a bit picky with my pictures though. Many times when I am having somebody else snap a picture for me that can be quite an annoyance. The Auto-mode definitely works better on landscapes than it does for people (in my opinion).

The scene-selector mode is sweet when I am the one taking the picture there are 15+ differing options that optimize the camera for different types of pictures such as: sunset, portrait, pet, beach, party/indoor, etc. I gave up even trying to teach the technologically handicapped this mode after the 2nd attempt.
The mode that has been the most useful for me has been the Smart-portrait mode. This mode basically finds a couple of people’s faces and then focuses the picture on them. Since the majority of the time I am taking pictures of people I have found this to be an amazing option. I use this mode for 90% of my pictures. I get pictures that look amazing and I usually give the camera to other people in this mode although sometimes it won’t take a picture and they will have to “refocus” the camera by re-pressing the button.

The smart tracking picture mode has honestly not been something that I have needed yet but I suppose it takes pictures of moving objects or something like that.
I could ramble on more but I figure that this should be sufficient for now. Overall this camera takes great pictures, they look sweet in print and they are very photoshopable (is that actually a word?) and look great in print form and also on the web.
